Shifnal Ladies Section
Shifnal Golf Club has one of the largest ladies’ sections in the region with over 100 lady members and 15 junior girls. Girls are welcome to play in all the ladies’ competitions as well as joining the boys in junior competitions. Female members of Shifnal Golf Club are full playing members with full voting and playing rights. The Ladies’ Section has its own Ladies’ Captain and Ladies’ President, who attend Board meetings and club committee meetings. The Ladies’ Captain chairs the Ladies’ Committee, which organises the ladies’ competitions, controls ladies’ handicaps and manages their finances.
Competitons
The ladies’ section has a very active and friendly playing membership both during the week and at weekends. Ladies’ weekly competitions are held on Thursdays and either Saturdays or Sundays, with a mixture of qualifying and team competitions. There are 13 Honours Board Trophies and another 10 trophies which are enthusiastically contested. Weekend medals and Stableford competitions are run monthly during the main playing season and there are alternate days at weekends for the Honours Board Trophies and the Ladies’ Club Championship. Honours Board Trophies are presented at the Club’s Annual Prize Presentation evening in November.
Lady Captain’s Day in June is the busiest day in the ladies’ playing calendar with a ladies’ 18 hole morning team shotgun, followed by 9 hold mixed competitions in the afternoon. There are two Ladies’ Open team events (in May and July), with a Ladies’ Invitation in September.
Female members also have the opportunity to play in various mixed competitions: there are three mixed trophy competitions, a mixed foursomes knockout and every Bank Holiday Monday in a mixed 4-ball better ball.
A series of special competitions are held to celebrate Christmas including a mixed competition run by the ladies’ section.
Matches
There are both scratch and handicap teams playing in leagues organised by the County. Also friendly matches for ladies or seniors are played either home or away versus other local clubs. Matches played between Ladies’ Captain and Ladies’ Vice Captain, Ladies and Men, Ladies and Seniors Men are fiercely contested, and we ask as many ladies as possible to play in these matches.
Other Activities
There is a popular Ladies’ Away Break – usually dinner, bed and breakfast and two rounds of golf, featuring a team competition on the first day (to get to know the course) and an individual Stableford for a cup the next day. This is a relaxing break for the ladies, but full of fun too. Also, an Exchange Day is arranged with another club – we usually try to travel slightly further afield than our friendly match venues.
Social
The Ladies’ Invitation Dinner Dance is held in March – when the ladies invite the men! The Ladies’ Committee organises an annual charity coffee morning and various other events (such as entertaining talks, lunches, trips out and to national golf competitions – especially if our members are playing).
How To Get Involved
New members will meet the Ladies’ Captain during their application to join the club and have a guided tour of the clubhouse and ladies’ locker room, during which golf and social information will be given. The Ladies’ Secretary will keep in touch and ensure new members are kept informed via emails. If you are thinking of applying to join us and would like to find out more, please email: secretary@shifnalgolf.com, with your contact details and we will arrange for a member to get in touch for an initial chat. Ladies new to golf will be given a golf ‘buddy’ to help them integrate into the golf club.
If you have not got a handicap – never fear, we will help and encourage you to gain one, and introduce you to other members to play with in fun competitions whilst you gain confidence. The Ladies’ Handicap Secretary will advise you how to get a handicap – you do not have to play a full 18 holes straight away. Once you have a handicap, you can enter the weekly competitions – we have a system for ladies looking for partners in any particular week. Partners for most ladies’ trophy competitions are drawn, with entry lists posted six weeks in advance on the competition notice board in the ladies’ locker room, and the draw made three weeks before the competitions. Apart from the weekly ladies’ Thursday or weekend competitions, you can also book to play at any time during the week or at the weekend, via the club’s online booking system.
Come and Join Us – we have ladies of all golfing abilities – you will soon find friendly faces to help you enjoy your golf at Shifnal Golf Club.
